When the United Nations Millennium Campaign was established by Kofi Annan, Secretary General, Kofi, in 2002, its specific purpose and mandate was to work with a wide range of partners to foster an independent movement - beyond the system United Nations - to achieve the MDGs. It was designed to disseminate data and analysis UN reports emerging, promoting partnerships between key actors, especially civil society, the link with other campaigns of the UN and coordinate strategies and campaign messages.
Over the past 10 years, the Millennium Campaign has built an impressive number of partnerships with civil society MDG advocacy and support coalition building strong commitments to accountability at the global, regional and national levels. Our work is fully within our guidelines for the care of the High Level Plenary Meeting 2010 high achieving the MDGs particularly in the areas of national ownership and commitment to growing the final document and expand Development Partnerships.
The 2010 Summit on the MDGs has renewed focus on the global challenge of the MDGs. In United Nations efforts are underway to create a synergy of efforts of advocacy and communication through the United Nations system in working more closely with the Development Group of the United Nations and improve advocacy and communication country level in supporting country teams in their United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) and other plans for 2015.
Efforts are made to maintain the visibility of the MDGs if developing and disseminating positive stories of the "citizens' initiative feedback" from the results at the country level and other credible sources. The campaign aims to lead a process of UN to synthesize the main areas of the MDGs focus and events and develop a common message of various UN agencies and make them available for use in the management of the UN and partners in civil society . In addition, the campaign is scaling up its social media strategy, including raising awareness of bloggers and social networking sites to provide better coverage and traction for its initiatives.
Responsibilities
The Millennium Campaign is seeking to recruit an international consultant to coordinate communication and implement a wide range of communications outputs designed to facilitate the advocacy and delivery of the MDGs stronger and more coordinated and outputs of communication between agencies UNDG, the whole United Nations system and civil society partners. Working with a wide range of partners committed the objective of these efforts will be to provide strategic communications, powerful and effective partnership initiatives and communication media to keep the MDGs on the political agenda and public and help shape the discourse around the MDGs to reflect progress and identify challenges to the approach of the 2015 MDG delivery. The consultant will report to the Director of the Millennium Campaign.
Summary of skills Skills:
Good knowledge of media and effective communication practices, including writing and publishing press releases, organize press conferences and communicate with the media to sell story ideas. Energetic and creative approach to communication and media start-up self awareness initiative. Strong interpersonal skills and good communication skills. Ability to work independently under tight deadlines. The ideal candidate will be an excellent communicator with a solid understanding of how strategic communications for effective advocacy and campaigning. Outstanding track record of building effective partnerships for communication within the general environment of communication, including the media at national and international agencies worldwide advertising, public relations and the private sector. The position requires flexibility, a creative thinker with a passion and will to get things done.
Required Skills and Education Experience:
Advanced university degree in communications or a related field. Experience: Minimumn 10-12 years experience in communications, with at least 5 years of progressive management responsibilities. Proven results in designing and implementing strategic communications plans. Extensive experience internationally, including work experience in the field of professional communication. Solid work experience in communicating awareness active experience and proven success of communication for the advancement of the Millennium Development and development issues. Extensive network of national and international contacts in print, broadcast and new. Proven success in building strong cause-oriented campaigns, online networking and social. Knowledge of current theories and best practices in communications. Knowledge of United Nations agencies, particularly the system of communication and understanding of international development issues. Flexible and used to working independently and produce quality results within tight deadlines. Proficient in Word, Powerpoint and Excel Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
