Responsibilities The incumbent supervises the operations of digital knowledge management for the collection, management and preservation of digital resources of the UN in the libraries of the UN. Formulate procedures, goals and directives for the development and maintenance of the library of digital repository in accordance with collection policies repository. Conducts research geared towards the development and applicability of information technology to the digital repository with data from internal and external sources. Provides advisory services on organization-wide conservation practices based on the needs, business processes, workflow, technical architecture and information resources of analysis, makes recommendations on conservation practices, improved and strategies for implementation, resource requirements, and procedures for transfer of digital information in the repository. Plans and develops strategies for migration to archival preservation of digital collections and develops and maintains the expertise to advise the United Nations libraries and information services in the management of digital information.
Professionalism: Excellent knowledge and experience in the application of information technology operations of the modern library, including digital archives and electronic resources management. A thorough knowledge of information resources of the UN and the work program of the Organization. A thorough knowledge and understanding of the relationship between library systems and multiple operations of the organization. Ability to prepare reports, formulate positions on issues, articulating options concisely maximum necessary information, making and defending recommendations. Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work. Planning and Organizing: Develops clear goals consistent with agreed strategies, identifies priority activities and assignments; adjust priorities as required; allow sufficient time and resources for completing work, consider the risks and contingencies when planning; , monitor and adjust plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.
Education Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) for archiving, information science, information systems, social sciences or related field. A bachelor's degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of advanced university degree. Work Experience At least seven years experience of increasing responsibility in the management of modern archives, record keeping, library, information management or related field. Experience working with information resources related to the UN is desirable. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, English (oral and written) is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
