Responsibilities Within delegated authority, under the direct supervision of the Director of the Division, the Deputy Director will serve as advisor to the Assistant Secretary-General on political developments and security in Eastern and Southern Africa and the measures to strengthen the ability of the UN in the field of preventive diplomacy and peacemaking. The Deputy Director will assist the Director of the direction, supervision and management of the substantive work of the Division and to assume direct responsibility for all administrative matters in the field of the assignment. (S), will represent the Ministry, if any, in the negotiations and other exchanges with representatives of Member States, regional organizations and other UN offices on measures to strengthen regional political stability, peace and security. The Deputy Director will assist the Director to ensure that programmed activities are carried out in a timely manner, coordinating the work of the various units within the Division and other organizations and bodies of the United Nations system, as appropriate, The background to provide advice on drafts prepared by others;

Education Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) preferably in political science, international affairs or a related field. A bachelor's degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of advanced university degree. Experience Minimum of fifteen years of responsible experience in national and international political and security affairs and diplomacy, political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or a related field. Management experience is required. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English (oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.
